Kharmang

The Kharmang Valley is one of the five biggest valleys of Baltistan; recently it became a district, whose headquarters is Tolti .The valley is located about 100 km from the capital city of Baltistan Skardu

The word Kahrmang is Balti; Khar means “fort” and mang means “abundant”.

The region was predominantly Buddhist, strongly influenced by Tibet, for centuries. Islam came into Baltistan via Sufi missionaries, starting in the 16th century, and today the region is mainly Shia Isn e Ashri Muslims.

For centuries, Baltistan consisted of small independent valley states that were connected to each other and to Ladakh through blood relationships of the rulers (rajas), trade, common beliefs and strong cultural and language bonds. These states were subjugated by force by the Dogra rulers of Kashmir in the nineteenth century.

Kharmang District is a political sub-division of Pakistan. It is part of Baltistan and currently constitutes one of the nine districts of the Gilgit–Baltistan territory of Pakistan. It is bounded on the southeast by Kargil district in the Indian-Administered Jammu and Kashmir, on the east by Ghanche District, on the northeast by Xinjiang (China), on the south by Baramulla and Kargil District, on the west by district Astore and on the north by Gilgit District. Attraction

Kharmang is a district in Gilgit-Baltistan at the distance of 311 km from Gilgit City on the banks of the Indus River along Kargil-Skardu Road. It is located on the Control Line between Pakistan and India, with Kargil district of Indian Occupied Kashmir.

There are number of most important visiting places in Kharmang such as Manthokha Waterfall in Madhupur, Khamoush Waterfall, Kharmang Khas Fort, etc. Kharmang is also famous for best quality fruits such as apple, apricot.

The main source of income is subsistence livestock rearing. Natives of Kharmang Valley speak Balti and Shina is also a native language in few villages, including Tarkati and Broolmo. Most belong to Shia sect of Islam. Kharmang is counted among the educated districts of Gilgit Baltistan with a literacy rate of over 85%
